I think the old pros pushed their thumb-nails onto a cooled pitch sample 
for 1 minute with ca. 1 lb force.  If the dent came out about 1/4" they 
figured they were good to go.

So you can REALLY see what works with pitch hardness, temperature, TOT/MOT, 
stroke type & length, etc., etc. ad infinitum, try taking and posting some 
Foucault measurements along with the pretty pictures which are SO open to 
interpretation.
