I usually say the most distant object I have managed to
nab, What I always say is, in my 8" f/6 newt I can detect
3C273 at 2 billion+ lyrs, you can then go on to compare
with a close neighbouring star like Alpha Centuri 4.37 lyrs
or one in the north, like Sirius 8.58 lyrs or 61 Cygni 
11.40 lyrs. Also explain a lil about how fast light travels

I also like to tell folks if 3C273 is up and in the FOV,
that the light hitting the back of your/their retina started
it's journey before molecular life started on Earth.
