Just for the sake of discussion as I would never try
it myself using a soot covered filter but the soot
filter causes phase contrast images to be very yellow.
 It could be that the soot scatters the blue and thus
ultraviolet frequencies.  Perhaps that is why it can
be used visually safely if it really can.

I don't know.
