Dale is right on the monbey. The peak for sensitivvity is
different from the most acute vision. The yellow-green of the
old slide rules was the color that the eye is most acute at. The
eye sees that color much better (as an old sliderule person, I
was happy when I got my first color ruler0 THAN WHITE. nEEDLESS
TO SAY, GREEN DIDN'T BRING UP THE CONTRAST BETTER THAN WHITE SO
IT WASN'T USED. hOWEVER, THE 550NM COLOR IS USUALLY THE COLOR
FREQUENCY THAT IS SPECIFIED, MOSTLY FOR EASE OF THE CALCULATION.
gO LOOK AT THE EMMISION LINES AROUND THAT VALUE AND YOU WILL SEE
THAT THERE IS ACTUALLY NOTHING AT THAT VALUE ALTHOUGH THERE IS
SOME LINES NEAR THAT WAVELENGTH. aNY OF THE ONLINEGLASS CATALOGS
WILL GIVE THE WAVELENGTHS OF THE VAROUS LINES USED AND i THINK
TAHT IT IS )OFF THE TOP OF MY HEADD_ IT IS THE d LIN AS THIS IS
THE ONE USUALLY USED FOR THE MIDDLE OF THE COLOR BAND FOR
DESIGNING A LENS.
tHE ACTUAL WAVELENGTH ISN'T THAT IMPORTANT, A FEW DOZEN
NANOMETERS ONE WAY OR THE OTHER WON'T CHANGE THINGS DRASTICALLY
BUT IT IS MORE IMMPORTANT THAT YOU HAVE A STANDARD. iMPERIAL
GALLONS ARE DIFFERENT THAN us GALLONS AND THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
IN THE GAS MILAGE REPORTED BY A MANUFACTURER AND THAT IS
BASICALLY THE SAME THING. tHE CAR STILL GOES AS FAR ON A TANK OF
GAS BUT THE mpg IS DIFFERENT.
