Along those lines, I saw a scope that used the plastic
HOOK side of velcro tape as the main altitude bearing
surface, riding on the usual teflon pads.  The maker
swore it gave great motion.  You might consider just
sticking a strip of the hook tape over your stainless
bearings and trying it out.
