I say break that tool in with the 80 grit, but thats just me...i'm a novice.
One thought tho...if you need to add another layer of tiles, that would be a
lot like starting over with a new tool...i mean the new tiles would be more
or less flat. So it wouldn't be much different than making a whole new tool
at that point (and considering the value of human error in gluing on new
tiles probably less desirable than a new tool cast to the slightly different
mirror). Most of the wear on the tile will probably occur just getting it
and the mirror shaped up good to each other. What i mean by that is, you
will be eating up less and less tile as you go down thru the grits so once
you break the tool in...well thats the lions share of tile disappearing.
patience is a virtue...i say keep at it, and don't be shy about going back a
grit anytime you think things are out of wack (its quicker than going back 2
grits later, or grinding a defect out with a "small" grit)...16" of mirrror
is a lot of surface area to deal with, and it will go faster once you marry
that tool and mirror up into good contact.
Are you doing this all by hand?
Best of luck Horrace,
