How about  the amateur building a slurry pump? I would suggest the Tesla
turbine as a pump. see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_turbine  The
Tesla turbine pump uses smooth discs that employ the boundary layer effect
see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boundary_layer  so there would be little
or no  problems with pumping abrasive slurry. Why not use magnetic coupling
to eliminate shaft protruding though the pump housing and associated
problems with a shaft seal?
