The University of Toronto is selling off to developers the land on which the David Dunlap Observatory stands. At least its trying very hard to sell it. I only became aware of this when Mel pointed to the news article in his last post.

I've since done a little research and it may not be too late to save the observatory. Perhaps the ATM list can rally enough support to turn the tide. There's a defense fund, there are people who can be written, and there is a petition to sign if you are Canadian.

The site is beautiful, the telescope is historic, its very easy to be in favor of maintaining it. Its just as easy to demonize turning this spot of wilderness into strip malls, sub divisions, and parking lots. A political dream cause celebre.

You can Google earth the observatory at 43 51 46.47 N 79 25 21.73 W From 10,000 feet up you can see the suburban sprawl the property holds at bay.

There are all kinds of good reasons to support the effort to save this observatory. If you care to help, be balanced with your emails. Tirades, name calling, threats, don't get read. If you have influence, weigh in. If you know someone who has influence or knows someone who knows someone who, ... ask for a favor. Asking for a favor is an opportunity to make a friend. Those of you on other lists, please cross post this. Lets make a difference.
