Cell phones I have tried did not work in eastern Sierra Nevada
and east into Nevada, but asking locals who obviously had
working cell phones and Internet revealed that they are using
Nextel/Sprint service. They used external antennas. I was
told that if I could not make a connection it was simply matter
of driving a couple miles to locations where locals knew
reception was better. My site is further north, towards Mono Lake.
I have noted strong winds bearing generally south and east
from here at 9000 feet elevation and higher.

Checking the Sprint coverage map, the area to the north and west
of Las Vegas (close to Area 51?) looks to have some form of coverage.

I would think there is no interest in here in Area 51 or the
immediate surroundings. As for acquiring space pics from a
balloon west of Area 51, one should check with Sprint. I would
also check wind direction in an effort to avoid trouble. In my
case, further northwest in CA where coverage also presents a problem
with most carriers, wireless internet access does work with
external antenna through Nextel/Sprint.
