They work just fine (at least for me). In any event, if the culprit was the
tool, the part unpolished should not be the center, as this is where ring
tool action should be indistinguishable from full tool action, as only the
outer rim of a normal tool crosses the center and only the outer rim of a
ring tool has grinding tiles.

David, is this the support structure you are grinding the mirror on? Can you
post a photo of the support setup?
