and how much better would the images be on average across the field at

One possible way: one IR LED one side of the focuser. 3 photodiodes in 
a ring, each straddling the edge of the shadow of the center marker, on 
the opposite side. Some simple (or otherwise) electronics to drive 2 
servos for collimation bolts.
Could perhaps be left on continuously for visual use...
